Institut Cochin: A research institute in basic biology dedicated to human pathology

The  Institut Cochin is a Research Center affiliated to INSERM (Unit 1016), CNRS (UMR 8104) and the Université de Paris (UMR-S 1016).

The staff members of the  Institut Cochin are about 650, including scientists, University teachers, clinicians, technicians, PhD and Master students and administrative agents. In total, 38 teams are supported by INSERM, CNRS and Université de Paris and 10 core facilities, including one from the University (3P5 proteomics facility) provide the scientists of the Institute and University with the most efficient technological support.

The  Institut Cochin is located in the campus of the Cochin Hospital, one of the most active Hospitals downtown Paris, in 3 major buildings (Méchain, Gustave Roussy, Cochin Faculty of Medicine) et 2 additional buidings (Hardy and Cassini), all together over a surface of about 17 000 m2.

The  Institut Cochin has been organized in 3 scientific departments:

The general objective of these departments is to boost collaborative research in multiple areas, to collectively supervise the activity of the PhD students (about 100 PhD students working in the Institute, with about 30 thesis defenses every year), to organize symposia in their respective fields of interest. All 3 departments are headed by a director and 1 or 2 vice-director(s), who are members of the board of directors of the Institut Cochin; they are assisted by a department committee constituted by the group leaders and delegates elected by the technicians, PhD students and post-doc fellows of the department.

Some of the greatest assets to scientists at the Institut Cochin are its state-of-the-art and efficient research core facilities, committed to provide the capability of analyzing biological materials using advanced technologies. This organization provides all the necessary human skills and highly specialized equipments allowing a broad range of investigations in the various domains of basic and biomedical research, not only to the groups of the Cochin Institute, but also to UPD groups and public or private groups beyond. The following core facilities are presently available:

     The Institut Cochin: History

The Institut Cochin was created on 01/01/2002 as a multidisciplinary, biomedical Research Center affiliated to the University Paris 5, INSERM and CNRS, with Prof Axel Kahn as the director. This creation was indeed a response and a support of these institutions to the strong will and determination of a dozen of previously independent INSERM or CNRS laboratories (grouped within a federative structure since 1990: the Institut Cochin of Molecular Genetics, ICGM, head by Prof. Jean-Paul Levy) to join their efforts to create a scientific and technological environment prone to provide their approximately 500 staff members with the most stimulating working conditions.

The Institut Cochin was renewed for 5 years on jan. 1st, 2019.
